Using Every Gear

The late cartoonist, Charles Schulz, who created Charlie Brown once said: “Life is like a 10-speed bicycle. Most of us have gears we never use.”
Often as executives and professionals we coast through familiar “gears” — the safe, predictable ones.
But leadership and growth demand more. Untapped skills, hidden potential, and unexplored strengths are sitting idle, waiting for you to engage them.
Here are a few of the common “gears” we miss:
Untapped Potential → that skill you haven’t sharpened because you’ve convinced yourself it’s “not your lane.”
Underutilization → talents you bring to the table but never fully leverage in your current role.
Missed Opportunities → doors you don’t walk through because comfort feels safer than risk.
The question is not whether you have another gear. You do.
The real question is: Will you choose to shift into it?
Growth isn’t automatic. It takes intentional effort, discomfort, and the willingness to try something new.
What gear have you been avoiding — and what would change if you engaged it today?
